A Message to Current Attendees: Know Before You Go

We look forward to seeing you next week at Standards Institute in sunny Los Angeles, CA! You are registered for (x pathway). At this time, we will address requests for changes at the registration desk, but note, all sections are sold out. Below are important tips to help you prepare and make the most of your time at Institute.

 

This is a long email, but an important one, so please keep reading! :)

 

IMPORTANT NOTES

Bring a fully charged laptop or tablet (preferred) or smartphone with you each day- you’ll need it to download documents throughout the week. There are limited outlets available in each session room. Take time to complete the pre-work for your pathway and grade band because we design the learning around this preparation. Also, certificates of completion are contingent upon completing both the pre and post surveys. You can access your pre-work and pre-survey here. Sessions start promptly at 8:30 am each morning and end at 4:30 pm (Friday concludes at 2:30 pm). Lunch and an afternoon snack are provided each day. Coffee is provided between 9:30am-10:00am each day. Breakfast is not provided.

Optional Team Time occurs each day from 4:45-5:30 pm. Designated locations for each team’s time will be posted here by Sunday, February 10. Check with your team about using this important tim`e to convene and debrief.

HOTEL & REGISTRATION

The Westin Bonaventure Hotel

Check-in: 3:00 pm  | Check out: 12:00 pm

Important tip about check-in: on Sunday, the Westin is checking out a very large group, and we have a very large group checking in - the hotel anticipates rooms will not be ready until between 3 - 4pm because of this turnover. If you arrive early, you can check your luggage with the hotel concierge, register for Institute after 4pm, and visit some of Los Angeles.

Registration

Collect your name badge and materials at the Registration Desk located in California Ballroom Foyer, Second Level. Important Note:  We strongly encourage you and your colleagues to register Sunday afternoon to avoid long lines on Monday morning.

 

Registration Hours:

Sunday, Feb 10:  4:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Monday, Feb 11:  7:00 am - 5:00 pm

Tuesday, Feb 12: 7:30 am - 9:00 am

 

Friday Check-Out:

You must check out of your room no later than 12:00 pm on Friday to avoid additional hotel charges. Friday’s sessions end at 2:30 pm. We encourage you to check-out before Friday’s keynote, which begins at 8:30am. If needed, you can check your bags at the hotel bell desk in the lobby until your departure. We will also have a place to store your luggage (complimentary) at the Standards Institute Registration Desk located in the California Ballroom Foyer, Second Level on Friday only.



 

MEALS and NEEDS REQUESTS

Breakfast: Breakfast is not provided in your registration, however there will be a place to get breakfast in the mornings for purchase in the food court, on the 4th floor of the Westin. Review other hotel restaurant options here.

Coffee: Coffee & tea will be provided each morning between 9:30am-10:00am.

Lunch: Lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided each day.

Special meal requests: All submitted special meal requests are seriously considered as well as food allergies. Lunches and break items will be clearly marked containing the ingredients. Those considered for a special meal for lunch will receive a meal card identifying your allergy along with your name badge, that you will show a banquet server for lunch.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Lightbulb Moment Video Booth | Everyday excluding Wednesday (11:30am-1:30pm)

Share your “Lightbulb Moment” with the #StandardsInstitute community and beyond! Bring your team, session or colleagues and join us during lunch near Pasadena Exhibit Hall, one level below the Lobby. Videos can be emailed directly to you and will be shared throughout the week via social media.

 

Family Engagement Lab | Tuesday, February 12 (12-1 pm)

Location: Beaudry B, Lobby Level

Districts interested in learning more about how the Oakland Unified School District and the Louisiana Department of Education partnered with the Family Engagement Lab to implement FASTalk (Families and Schools Talk). FASTalk engages families in improving literacy outcomes for all students, including English learners and students with disabilities, in six school systems. Movie Night Screening and Discussion: America to Me, Episode 2 | Tuesday, February 12 (7- 8:30 pm)

Location: California Ballroom - San Diego, Second Level

Join us Tuesday, February 12, as we screen an episode of America to Me, a 10 part docu-series by Academy-Award nominated director Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Life Itself, The Interrupters) which follows a year in the life of students, teachers, and administrators at Oak Park and River Forest High School near Chicago. The series, which airs on STARZ, deals with issues of race and privilege within a well-resourced, racially integrated public high school. Those who attend the movie night will receive a special gift from America to Me team and will also have the opportunity to sit down the following day in an exclusive Q&A session. Please bring a laptop and your phone if you’re interested in attending the Q&A session.

 

America to Me Q&A | Wednesday, February 13 (12-1 pm)

Location: Beaudry B, Lobby Level

As a follow-up to movie night, America to Me team will join us again Wednesday afternoon for a special Q&A session. They will also explain more about other documentaries in the works, such as TEACH, and how you can host discussion groups for students, teachers, parents, administrators, community members, politicians, and influencers on race and equity.

 

IBM Teacher Advisor Focus Groups | Wednesday, February 13 and Thursday, February 14 (12-1 pm)

Location: Sunset, Second Level

IBM's Teacher Advisor with Watson is a free planning tool for K-8 math teachers that help users find resources, customize lessons, and save time. The Teacher Advisor team will be conducting three focus groups at the Standards Institute, and they want to hear from you about how they should improve their product in 2019. Sessions will be held at lunch and in the evening on Wednesday, February 13 and at lunch on Thursday, February 14. Space at each session is limited, and all participants will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. If you're interested, please complete this one-minute survey.



The team will also be available in the registration area for a meet and greet throughout the day on Wednesday-Friday if you want to learn more about how they can help you plan your math class using high-quality instructional materials.

 

TNTP’s The Opportunity Myth Demo | Thursday, February 14 (12-1 pm)

Location: Avalon, Third Level

Recently, TNTP followed nearly 4,000 students in five diverse school systems to learn more about their experiences. What they found was unnerving: classroom after classroom filled with A and B students whose big goals for their lives are slipping further away each day, unbeknownst to them and their families—not TNTP as the team recounts the findings and discuss what you as an educator can do to address it.

 

GETTING THERE

Parking: Discounted Westin event parking for the day (for those not staying at the hotel) is $24 per day. Discounted valet parking is $30 per day for overnight guests only. Please visit the UnboundEd registration desk in the California Ballroom Foyer, Second Level, for your validation sticker to receive your discount upon exiting the garage.

Attire & Weather: The Standards Institute is a business casual event. We recommend wearing layers as the workshop rooms can sometimes feel too cold or too warm. We also recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Bring an umbrella as rain showers are not expected but always possible.
